Ecumenical Relations of the Mar Thoma Church

Anglican Communion

The Marthoma Church maintains a cordial relationship with the Anglican Communion. The Marthoma Church was influenced by the Anglican tradition, particularly during the period of British colonial rule in India, when it came into contact with Anglican missionaries. The church is often considered to have an "Anglo-Indian" character, blending elements of Anglican liturgical practice and theology with its indigenous traditions. The Marthoma Church and the Anglican Church share a commitment to the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and a liturgical structure, which fosters an ongoing ecumenical bond.

World Council of Churches (WCC)

The Marthoma Church is a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC), which is a global fellowship of Christian denominations committed to promoting unity among the various branches of Christianity. Through the WCC, the Marthoma Church participates in global ecumenical discussions and initiatives aimed at fostering Christian unity, social justice, peace, and reconciliation.

The Canadian Council of Churches (CCC)

The Marthoma Church in Canada participates in the CCC, the largest ecumenical body in Canada, consisting of over 25 Christian denominations. This membership helps the Marthoma community engage in collaborative initiatives related to peace, justice, and Christian unity.

Cooperation with international organizations

Active cooperation of the Church is extended to international Christian Organizations, such as Y.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., S.C.M. etc

Orthodox Church

In Canada, the Indian Christian Fellowship provides a platform for various Indian Christian communities, including the Marthoma Church, to come together and collaborate in worship, mission, and social action. The Marthoma Church works with other Indian Christian denominations, such as the Syrian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, in organizing joint worship services, conferences, and social events.

Roman Catholic Church

Though the Marthoma Church is theologically distinct from the Roman Catholic Church, it maintains a respectful ecumenical relationship with the Catholic community in North America. Both churches engage in dialogues on shared Christian principles and common concerns such as social justice, humanitarian work, and promoting Christian values in the public sphere. The Marthoma Church is also involved in inter-denominational efforts with the Catholic Church in youth ministry, education, and healthcare.

The Mar Thoma Church Youth Fellowship is a dynamic group of young believers dedicated to deepening their faith, nurturing relationships, and serving the community. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, the fellowship offers a space for youth to grow spiritually through Bible studies, prayer meetings, and worship, while also engaging in community service, outreach programs, and leadership development. With a commitment to both personal and collective transformation, the fellowship empowers young people to live out their faith boldly and purposefully.

As the Bible reminds us, "Let no one despise your youth; but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity." - 1 Timothy 4:12.

The Mar Thoma Church Youth Fellowship seeks to inspire the next generation to embody these values, building a strong, vibrant, and compassionate Church community for today and the future. Join us as we strive to live out God’s calling in every area of life.
